1: Learn Principles, Not Just Techniques…
Teaching hypnosis based on memorized word for word scripts is often thought of as a relic of the past, but new methods, from NLP to the ‘covert hypnosis’ world, are often just as guilty of this ‘crime.’
Learning techniques is fine, provided you treat them as what they are: examples! A technique is just an example of one very specific way to apply a specific collection of principles in a specific situation (how many more times can I use “specific” in one sentence…)
In order to become a real hypnotist learn to look at techniques not with the blind monkey-like intention to copy, but with the rational mind of an intelligent human being, breaking down the various elements, and thinking about how you can improve, adapt, interpret and re-apply the principles in the situations you face.
2: Don’t Re-Invent the Wheel – But Drive Your Own Car
The reason why many people are daunted – dare I say terrified – of doing hypnosis ‘freestyle’ without the aid of a script is that they fear having to re-invent the entire hypnotic process – an understandably off putting task!
The truth is, you don’t have the re-invent the wheel. As we have seen, use principles that work, and look at existing techniques with an eye to breaking down the existing elements and applying them in your way.
It’s fine to utilize existing elements, provided you are using them with consciousness – an understanding of their meaning and purpose, and a realization of what is really going on.
Blindly using bits and blocks will only harm and limit you, but creatively making the most of existing peaces provided you fully understand what they do is only common sense.
3 – Practice Being a Bit… Weird!
Do hypnosis in safe settings – whether with a friend or familiar subject, or even (as a practice tool, obviously) to the wall or any inanimate object who will sit still long enough to listen!
As you do this, practice being… weird! Use long and flowery language patterns, tell bizarre and creative stories, and test out new methods and processes.
In a situation where you know you cannot fail, and there’s no pressure, this will get you used to speaking from your own mind. Practice out loud and in your head until the words just flow without you even having to think about it. You should get to the point where you can just open your mouth and let the words flow, without having to engage your conscious mind at all.

Yes many hypnotists are only working with scripts. I am from germany and I have been on many workshops in my country and I can say that most schools are teaching with scripts. It is a shame. It would be better if they are teaching the principles. Only a few are doing this.
