I just received this question from a Keys To The Mind reader named Stephen:
Nathan,
I have been following you for several years now, and I am very impressed with your “rise ” in the ranks of renowned experts in the field of hypnosis. I can say that I feel a sense of pride in you, because if I hadn’t followed you on your journey (along with many world wide ) you may not be where you are now.
All that aside, my question for you is: When can a person studying hypnosis genuinely call themselves a “Master Hypnotist”?
Sincerely,
Stephen
What a great question!
“Master Hypnotist” is a phrase we love to bandy about in our marketing and such like which I do think it is quite over used. Like any term, you can pretty much make it mean whatever you want it to, and different people have defined mastery in different ways – for some it’s 10,000 hours of practice, for others it’s this certificate or that.
In this post I thought we’d skip the technicalities, and focus instead on seven practical and useful habits of master hypnotists. Implement these into what you do, and you’ll not only become a more effective hypnotist, but you’ll find the path to true mastery a lot smoother.
You’ll find these ‘rules’ (although they’re not unbreakable) apply to far more than just hypnosis! Have a read, and see how you can apply this in your life.
The Seven Rules of Hypnosis Mastery
1: Being Versus Doing
While beginners are often obsessed with the external, masters know the value of looking inside. Be prepared to transform your beliefs, face your fears, and work past the insecurities and limitations that have been holding you back. True mastery happens within.
2: Action not just Thought
While you need to learn as much as you can, information is nothing unless you put it into practice. The best way to gain confidence is to act. Practice, be prepared to fail, learn from each experience, and mastery will come.
3: Life Long Learning
There is no one magic state of ‘mastery’ where the learning just stops. Confidence is great, but it becomes dangerous when it prevents you from learning. There will always be something new to discover, a new skill to learn, or a new area to explore. Expect to never stop, and enjoy every step of the process.
4: No Dogma Allowed
Various schools of hypnosis will have their own ‘unbreakable rules’ and ‘unique’ techniques which they claim no other form or style could hope to match. Rather than getting bogged down with one narrow minded agenda, learn from all sources, and be flexible.
5: Play To Your Strengths
What are you best at? Observation and empathy, words and language, working with groups or one on one? Identify your strengths, and use your natural advantages to overcome your weaknesses. Using areas in which you are rich in resources to help in areas where you are lacking is one of the keys not just to mastery in general, but it also lies at the very root of hypnotherapy itself. Think about that.
6: Look Outside the Box
A lot of people think true masters are single minded, and ONLY practice what they specialize in. The reality is you’ll learn and grow so much more if you also have other passions. Reckon there are lessons you can learn in football, martial arts, acting, hiking or any other field that will help with your hypnosis? You bet there are! Explore other fields, and the cross over you discover will be incredibly useful.
7: Teaching is a Fantastic Way to Learn
Have a friend who wishes he or she could do what you do? Share your passion! The simple art of explaining what you do to others and walking them through it will deepen your confidence and understanding 100 fold. Think about it; you get to give someone skills that will change their life, whilst greatly increasing your own level of ability! Why do you think I first got into teaching all those years ago?
