In September 2006, Randy Pausch was told he had pancreatic cancer. In August 2007, he was told by some of the finest doctors in the world that he had 3 to 6 months of good health left. Between receiving that shocking news, and his death 14 months later, Randy would inspire literally millions of people around the world with what he calls “The Last Lecture.” I watched it just two days ago, and was truly blown away.

Randy Pausch was a phenomenally successfully professor of computer science at America’s prestigious Carnegie Mellon University. He consulted with Google and Disney, co-authored 5 books, and was awarded many highly esteemed honors. In the last lecture he tells stories from his life, and shares what he learned about achieving your childhood dreams.

The success of the lecture catapulted him into worldwide fame – the video now has over 10 million videos on YouTube, and before his death Randy shared his message on TV with none other than Oprah Winfrey.

As people in a field wrapped up in the often over hyped and obnoxiously over-commercialized self development world, this is not just a breath of fresh air, but a breath of new life. Allow yourself to be uplifted and inspired by a man who looks proudly upon his life whilst staring his imminent death in the face, and allow his stories and philosophy to make a difference in your life.

There’s so much you can learn from this. From the direct message, to the use of stories, to the very idea of a ‘head fake’ (and the cheeky two at the end) this video is a veritable treasure trove of perfectly executed hypnotic persuasion techniques.

And you know what, I wouldn’t be surprised if Randy had never read (or even heard of!) an NLP book in his life.

In the confusing world of hypnosis and NLP it’s often hard to keep track of the real point – to grow as people, help others, and live life to the full. The best training, and the best opportunities to learn and grow as hypnotists are often without sign posts, and it can take some creativity to find them.

This lecture is a fantastic example, and I hope you got as much from it as I did.
