The Power of Expectation – 2 Ways To Bust Nervousness and “Win Before You Begin”

When most people approach a hypnosis / persuasion situation, they go in there with two things,

1: what they hope to achieve
2: what they expect to achieve.

What messes people up is that these are usually two very different things!

The trouble with ‘hope’ is that it’s too close to ‘if only.’ Most of us don’t go to bed thinking “i hope I wake up tomorrow” (well, except maybe on Saturday nights!) – we just expect to. If we had to hope, we’d probably be so nervous we’d never get to sleep!

You may hope to pull of an instant hypnotic induction – but secretly expect the technique to feel. You may hope to help someone overcome a problem or to motivate someone towards a certain course of action – but if your expectations are not high, then you are very unlikely to get what you hope for.

Why?

The unconscious mind will try and create what you expect. If you get what you expect, then you will have planned for it, and won’t be caught off guard or surprised.

Fear tends to carry more emotional clout than hope, which means people focus on what they fear, and think about it so much that it becomes real. Since this is what they are fixated upon, they will unconsciously act to make this happen.

This is one of the many reasons why confidence is so key to your success with street hypnosis and hypnotic persuasion skills – when you are confident, you expect success.

But isn’t it impossible – maybe even arrogant and reckless – to expect success? Particularly when you have little experience, or are just starting out?

Here’s where things get a little tricky, and where it becomes easy to fall down the pointless vortex of semantics and definitions, so I’ll try and keep things as simple as possible.

It all depends on what “success” means to you. If you think success = perfection and perfection = things happening the same way every time, then you are setting yourself up for failure!

But, if your definition or success is less rigid, and is focused more on a deeper, long term goal, such as
- helping someone to feel good / live life to the full
- increasing your skill level
- gaining new experiences
- growing your confidence,

then success becomes far more likely. In fact, since even a text book ‘failure’ can give you new learning experiences that will increase your skill level, then pretty much any outcome will be a success, won’t it?

Because you have made your ‘frame work’ for a positive outcome more flexible, it means that it is easy for you to expect a positive result. In fact, you’d be foolish not too!

And since you expect (rather than hope) that things will work out well, then you might as well be confident!

I call this the ‘every outcome is a positive outcome‘ frame, and it’s fantastic for building your confidence and skill level when you are just getting started. (By the way, do you ever wonder what would happen if you decided to apply this frame to EVERY aspect of your life? Just a thought…)

However, I am sure you can imagine that in more ‘high stakes’ situations – such as if you are working professionally with a client, or have a specific, definite outcome that you need to achieve, this frame may not be totally relevant, and you’ll need another way to create more specific positive intentions.

The best (and easiest) way to do this, is simply with mental rehearsal. It may sound like a 1970s self help fad, but it’s worth taking seriously, as Olympic Medalists and world leading public speakers continue to prove and attest to year after you.

Mentally run through things going well – and imagine a perfect situation. You say the right thing in the right way, and get the reaction you want.

Make this as real as possible, and really put yourself in the picture and feel all the emotions – good and bad – that you will feel when you actually do what you need to do in the real world.

The more you do this, the more vivid and convincing your visualizations will become.

Then, when you go to do your induction, work with your client, talk to whoever you need to talk to or do what it is that you need to do, then your unconscious mind will be ready for you!

Since you imagined success so many times, your neurology will be programmed to expect it, and work to make it happen.

You now have two powerful techniques for getting out of your own way, getting over nervousness, and being confident when doing street hypnosis and hypnotic persuasion skills.

To recap:

1: The learning frame: Realize that, in some ways, all outcomes can be positive outcomes.
2: Mental rehearsal: Mentally practice success, and you’ll hard wire yourself for it.

Hope you enjoyed this post, and I’ll see you soon!
Cheers,
Nathan Thomas

Lovely article Nathan! Great stuff that goes very deep. Changing my expectations and my focus on the ‘bright side’ (moving torwards success) brought me great results.

I think you may have a freudian slip on line 10 “feel” instead of “fail”?

anyway just feel good now and relax deeper and deeper still ;-)
